llms.txt is a plain-text Markdown file at /llms.txt that summarizes a website for large language models: what it is, who it is for, and which pages matter most. GEO Checker detects the file, confirms it returns HTTP 200, and reports it alongside your AI crawler and schema results.

How to write an llms.txt file in 5 steps

  1. Start with # Your Brand as the only H1.
  2. Add a one-paragraph summary as a blockquote (> ...) with a definition sentence and 2–3 concrete facts (price, free tier, audience).
  3. Add ## Core pages with 3–10 Markdown links and a short description after each.
  4. Optionally add ## Docs, ## Pricing and ## Optional sections.
  5. Upload it to the site root, then run the checker above to confirm HTTP 200.

FAQ

What is llms.txt?

llms.txt is a proposed standard (llmstxt.org, 2024): a Markdown file at the root of a site (/llms.txt) that gives language models a short summary of the site and links to its most important pages.

Do ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google use llms.txt?

As of October 2026 no major AI search engine has publicly confirmed using llms.txt for ranking or citations. It is cheap to publish and is read by some AI agents and developer tools, so treat it as low-cost insurance rather than a ranking factor.

What should llms.txt contain?

An H1 with the site or product name, a one-paragraph blockquote summary, then H2 sections with Markdown link lists to key pages, each with a short description. Keep facts such as prices and limits identical to your pages.

Where do I put llms.txt?

At the root of your domain, served as plain text with HTTP 200: https://example.com/llms.txt. It should not be blocked by robots.txt or your firewall.

Is the llms.txt checker free?

Yes: free single-URL checks, up to 10 per hour, no sign-up. The same scan also checks AI crawler access and structured data.
